Giveaway! No Place to Fall by Jaye Robin Brown

I was lucky enough to get an ARC of Jaye Robin Brown's NO PLACE TO FALL a while back, and let me tell you, it's one of my favorite books this year. I loved it so much, I want to let it free out into the world so one of you can love it to!

The Sky Is Everywhere meets This Lullaby in a sexy and poignant debut novel about family, friendships, and first romance. Amber Vaughn is a good girl. She sings solos at church, babysits her nephew after school, and spends Friday nights hanging out at the house of her best friend, Devon. But when she learns about an audition at a prestigious arts school, Amber decides that her dream—to sing on bigger stages—could also be her ticket to a new life. Devon’s older brother, Will, helps Amber prepare for her one chance to try out. The more time Will and Amber spend together, the more complicated their relationship becomes . . . and Amber starts to wonder if she’s such a good girl, after all. Then, in an afternoon, the bottom drops out of her family’s world—and Amber is faced with an impossible choice between her promise as an artist and the people she loves. Amber always thought she knew what a good girl would do. But between right and wrong, there’s a whole world of possibilities.

Here's Amber from NO PLACE TO FALL to tell you how the contest works!

Well, hey there! So nice of you to drop into these writers’ blogs and see what they’re up to. Here’s the deal. My name is Amber Vaughn, and I’m the main character in Jaye Robin Brown’s debut novel, NO PLACE TO FALL. Because I want you to read about me and read about my friends Devon, and C.A. and—be still my heart—Will McKinney, I’ve devised a scheme to encourage Lisa Maxwell to give away her ARC of the book I’m in.

If you don’t already know, I’m a singer. Will says my voice is as sweet as Patsy Cline’s which I think is hogwash, but still, I do love to sing. And I’m going to audition to get into the NC School of the Arts so I can get out of my tiny town of Sevenmile, NC and somewhere my whole life will be about music. But auditioning is seriously freaking me out. Yeah, I sing in church, and I sing out on the trails, but an audition? In front of people who really know their stuff?

So, I want your help. I mean, I know NC-Arts has real requirements and stuff for their auditions, but I don’t want you to pay attention to that. I want you to tell me which song you’d audition with and why. Which song is so personal to you your voice would shine? And I want you to do it in a tweet! (and it’s okay if you don’t think you can sing, my author, Jaye Robin Brown, doesn’t think she can either)

Here’s the deal. Between today, August 11 and Wednesday, August 13th, until midnight PST, tweet your audition song and why, with the hashtag #NoPlaceToFall. I’m going to choose the winner (US only, please). That’s right, I, Amber Vaughn, will choose who gets to read about me. Here’s a hint. I want to see your singer’s soul!

If I just can’t decide, then I’m going to draw straws from the finalists and the ones I don’t pick will get some signed swag in the mail!

 Sing loud, y’all!

Okay, it’s Jaye Robin Brown and that cheeky character of mine is insisting I choose an audition song, which she knows is completely unfair because I have a range the length of an inch worm. I hate how she flaunts her talents over me.

There are so many great songs! Gah. But if I could sing as well as Amber can, I think I’d choose Jem’s Save Me. http://youtu.be/ZhLp8nVSHTw  I discovered this Welsh singer, in some of my Spotify ramblings and I really love how this song speaks to the insecurity of the creative mind. With stanzas like this that both point to the reality of creative angst and our ability to shut it down, it speaks to me as both a writer and an artist and someone who doesn’t want to be taken over by fear. Plus the tune is catchy and I love the ending! It’d be fun to sing.

Mirror mirror on the wall
Who's the dumbest of them all?
Insecurities keep growing
Wasted energies are flowing
Anger, pain and sadness beckon
Panic sets in in a second
Be aware, it's just your mind
And you can stop it anytime
Jem, Save Me.
